Doughty Tutoring

Michelle Doughty, English Language and Literature Tutor

I have a proven track record in tutoring children and young adults, up to the age of 16 (GCSE). My style is gentle and positive, encouraging students to enjoy and engage with English Language and Literature. I aim to make lessons fun, joyful, and inspiring.

I have been tutoring since 2012, with more than 500 hours of one-to-one sessions.  Over this period I’ve helped over 75 students, from the ages of 5 – 16.

Supporting School Studies

I tutor KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4 English Language, English Literature, Phonics, Comprehension, and Verbal Reasoning.

Exam Preparation

I help students with exam preparation and technique, in both English Language and Literature.

Typically I have helped my students to improve their English literacy skills / levels by two to three grades over a period of six – twelve months.

I have substantial experience of helping students to prepare for SATs, 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+ and GCSE English Literature and Language exams.

I’m very familiar with the following exam board curriculums: AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and iGCSE.

English Language

I help students to make significant improvements to their confidence with reading and writing, as well as vocabulary, spelling, reasoning and comprehension skills.

English Literature

I am very familiar with the key texts and syllabus of all the exam boards. I help students with close analysis of key texts, understanding context and developing strong essay technique.

Neurodivergence

I excel in helping students who may have a slight or significant delay in their literacy development. This can arise for a wide variety of reasons, including: natural personality traits such as shyness or a lack of confidence, bereavement, trauma, receiving insufficient one-to-one support at school, busy parents at home, or perhaps a mild to moderate neurodivergence or SEN issue.

London-based and Online

I offer both online and in-person tutoring. When tutoring face to face, I can travel 30 – 45 minutes from King’s Cross.
